What Is the Best Feldspar for Vitrified Tiles?

The best feldspar for vitrified tiles — including GVT (Glazed Vitrified Tile) and full-body vitrified tile — combines K₂O 11.5-13% (potash feldspar) or Na₂O 9.5-11% (soda feldspar) flux content, Fe₂O₃ below 0.08-0.15% for consistent whiteness, and 200/325 mesh grading for uniform, complete melt within the firing cycle. Vitrified tile bodies require higher flux content than standard wall tile to achieve the near-zero porosity that defines vitrification, making feldspar consistency the single largest raw material factor in achieving both strength and dimensional stability.

The 5 specification priorities for vitrified tile feldspar:
  • Higher flux content than wall tile grades — K₂O/Na₂O 11.5%+ to achieve the full vitrification vitrified tile bodies require.
  • Consistent 200/325 mesh grading — for uniform, complete melt supporting the tight dimensional tolerance vitrified tile production demands.
  • Fe₂O₃ below 0.08-0.15% — sufficient whiteness for polished GVT surfaces, tighter for premium export lines.
  • Low, stable LOI — minimizes gas-release defects (pinholing, bloating) that show more visibly on polished vitrified surfaces.
  • NABL COA verified per shipment — the dimensional tolerance vitrified tile demands leaves little room for undetected batch drift.

Why Vitrified Tiles Need a Different Feldspar Spec Than Wall Tile

Vitrified tiles — including GVT (Glazed Vitrified Tile) and full-body vitrified tile — are fired to achieve near-zero water absorption through near-complete vitrification of the body. This requires a higher proportion of feldspar flux than standard wall tile bodies, and much tighter consistency in that flux content, mesh grading, and iron level, since vitrified tile's tight dimensional and surface-quality tolerances leave far less room for raw material variability than a standard wall tile line.

"Vitrified tile doesn't just need more feldspar than wall tile — it needs feldspar that behaves the same way, shipment after shipment."

Feldspar Requirements by Vitrified Tile Type

TILE TYPEK₂O / NA₂O TARGETFE₂O₃ TARGETMESH
Full-Body Vitrified Tile K₂O 11.5-12.5% <0.15% 200/325M
Polished GVT K₂O 11.5-13% or Na₂O 10-11% <0.08% 325M
Export Vitrified Tile K₂O 11.5-12.5% <0.06-0.10% 325M

What to Verify Before Buying Feldspar for Vitrified Tile

PRIORITY 01

Flux Content Consistency

K₂O or Na₂O held within a tight ±0.3% band lot to lot — the single largest factor in holding vitrified tile's dimensional tolerance.

PRIORITY 02

Mesh Grading for Complete Melt

200/325 mesh with verified sieve analysis, ensuring uniform, complete melt within the vitrified firing cycle without unmelted grains.

PRIORITY 03

Fe₂O₃ Matched to Surface Requirement

Standard vitrified tile can use Fe₂O₃ up to 0.15%; polished GVT needs 0.08% or lower to avoid visible tinting on the polished surface.

PRIORITY 04

Low, Stable LOI

Below 0.4-0.6% to minimize pinholing and gas-release defects, which show up more visibly on a polished vitrified surface than a matte wall tile.

PRIORITY 05

Per-Shipment NABL COA

Given vitrified tile's tight tolerances, a one-time sample is not sufficient — every shipment needs verified chemistry, LOI, and mesh data.

The Aalok Overseas Advantage for Vitrified Tile Manufacturers

Vitrified-Grade Potash & Soda Feldspar

K₂O 11.5-13% and Na₂O 9.5-11% grades specifically suited to vitrified tile's higher flux requirement, mesh-graded 200/325.

NABL COA on Every Shipment

Flux content, Fe₂O₃, LOI, and sieve analysis verified per lot — the consistency vitrified tile's tight tolerance demands.

High Whiteness Grades for Polished GVT

Fe₂O₃ as low as <0.06-0.08% available for polished vitrified tile lines where surface whiteness is a quality-inspection criterion.

Full Complementary Range

Quartz powder and kaolin also available from the same Rajasthan operations, letting vitrified tile manufacturers consolidate their entire body formulation sourcing.

Why Manufacturers Choose Aalok Overseas

Since 1992, Aalok Overseas has supplied mine-direct, NABL-certified feldspar to vitrified tile manufacturers across 50+ countries. Vitrified tile's tolerance for raw material inconsistency is the tightest in ceramic manufacturing — Aalok Overseas' mine-direct control is what makes that tolerance achievable, shipment after shipment.

FAQ — Feldspar for Vitrified Tiles

Q

What K2O or Na2O content is best for vitrified tile feldspar?

K₂O 11.5-13% for potash feldspar or Na₂O 9.5-11% for soda feldspar is typical for vitrified tile, higher than standard wall tile grades, to achieve the near-zero porosity vitrification requires.

Q

Why does polished GVT need lower Fe2O3 than standard vitrified tile?

Polishing exposes and highlights any tint in the body, making iron-related colour variation far more visible than on a matte or textured surface, so polished GVT lines typically specify Fe₂O₃ below 0.08%.

Q

Which mesh size is best for vitrified tile feldspar?

325 mesh is generally preferred for vitrified tile to ensure complete, uniform melt within the firing cycle, though 200 mesh can be adequate for some full-body vitrified formulations.

Q

Why is per-shipment COA more important for vitrified tile than wall tile?

Vitrified tile's dimensional and surface-quality tolerances are significantly tighter than standard wall tile, meaning even minor batch-to-batch feldspar variation that wall tile could absorb can push vitrified tile out of spec.

Q

Can the same feldspar grade work for both potash and soda-based vitrified tile recipes?

No. Potash and soda feldspar have different melt viscosity and vitrification behaviour, so a recipe designed around one type generally needs reformulation, not just substitution, when switching to the other.
