It happens when the glaze doesn't stay fluid enough, for long enough, at peak firing temperature to flow and self-level under its own surface tension before the kiln begins cooling and the glass phase sets. This is fundamentally a viscosity and flux problem — the glaze's melt behaviour, driven mostly by feldspar flux content and consistency, sets the ceiling on how smooth a fired surface can become.

CAUSE 01
Feldspar's K₂O/Na₂O content directly drives glaze melt viscosity. A glaze recipe with too little flux stays stiffer at peak temperature than intended, leaving surface texture behind instead of flowing smooth.
CAUSE 02
Coarser particles melt more slowly and less completely within a fixed firing cycle, and inconsistent grading produces uneven melt across the surface — both leave visible bumpy texture.
CAUSE 03
Potassium feldspar's higher, wider-range viscosity may not flow fast enough for a short, fast-fire cycle designed around sodium feldspar's faster melt — a type mismatch worsens orange peel risk.
CAUSE 04
A glaze recipe calibrated for a specific feldspar lot's flux content can develop orange peel texture if a new lot has lower flux than expected, even without any recipe change.
CAUSE 05
Elevated LOI in feldspar or quartz can disrupt the timing of full melt and levelling, especially if gas release coincides with the glaze's critical flow window.
CAUSE 06
Without NABL COA on every incoming lot, a shift in flux content or mesh consistency goes undetected until orange peel texture shows up on fired ware.
