Unlike feldspar or quartz, kaolin contributes plasticity in the raw (green) state — helping shape a ceramic body before firing — and then contributes whiteness and mullite formation during firing. MARKER 02 — WHITENESS CRITICAL
Iron oxide is the single most damaging impurity for whiteness in kaolin — because kaolin itself is chosen specifically for its whiteness contribution, iron control here matters even more than in feldspar or quartz.
