Iron oxide is the dominant impurity responsible for cream, buff, or yellow tinting in kaolin — and because kaolin is chosen specifically for whiteness, its iron ceiling is held tighter than in feldspar or quartz relative to their respective roles. Standard-grade kaolin commonly runs Fe₂O₃ 0.6-1.2%, which is acceptable for domestic wall tile but visibly limits brightness in premium white ware and coatings. Genuinely high whiteness kaolin holds Fe₂O₃ below 0.2-0.3%, and Aalok Overseas' paper-grade formulation below 0.15%.
MARKER 02 — OFTEN OVERLOOKED
Titanium dioxide produces a distinct grey undertone that is easy to miss if a supplier only reports Fe₂O₃ — and kaolin deposits are naturally more prone to carrying accessory titanium minerals than feldspar or quartz deposits. Buyers who test iron alone can still receive material that fires or coats dull because titanium was never controlled. High whiteness kaolin specifies TiO₂ below 0.3-0.5% as a separate, verified line item on the COA.
