The final price you pay as an importer of Indian feldspar, quartz, or mica is the sum of many individual cost layers — from the moment the raw mineral is extracted at the mine face to the moment the container is loaded onto the vessel at Mundra or JNPT. Understanding each cost layer helps you evaluate whether a quote is fair, where cost savings are possible, and why different grades and forms carry different price points.
| Cost Element | USD / MT | What It Covers | Notes for Buyers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Raw Mineral — Lumps (Ex-Mine) | $30–35 | Mining royalty, blasting, excavation, primary crusher, ROM stock at mine gate. Includes mining lease fees paid to Rajasthan state government. | Price varies with grade (K₂O%), whiteness, and mine location. Premium white grade (Fe₂O₃ <0.06%) commands higher price. |
| 2. Segregation & Manual Sorting | $2–4 | Manual removal of gangue minerals, dark veins, mica pockets, and contaminated rock. Critical for achieving consistent oxide analysis. Skilled labour cost. | Premium grades require more intensive hand-sorting — adds $1–2/MT vs standard grade. Not required for coarse industrial grades. |
| 3. Washing & Wet Processing | $2–4 | Water washing of crushed rock to remove surface iron staining, clay films, fine silica sand. Magnetic separation (HIMS) to remove iron minerals. Drying after wet processing. | This step is what makes the difference between Fe₂O₃ 0.15% and Fe₂O₃ 0.06%. Essential for premium white grade. Many exporters skip this — buyer beware. |
| 4. Grinding Cost (200M / 325M) | $13–17 | Ball mill or Raymond mill grinding, energy (electricity), mill maintenance, grinding media (steel balls), classification (cyclones/screens), dry magnetic separation post-grinding. | 325M costs ~$2–3/MT more than 200M (finer grind = more energy + longer residence time). 600M costs $5–7/MT more than 200M. |
| 5. NABL Lab Testing (COA) | $0.5–1 | XRF analysis (all 9–12 oxides), laser PSD (particle size distribution), whiteness testing (Elrepho), moisture testing. Amortised per tonne across the lot size. | Non-negotiable cost for international-grade material. Exporters who skip NABL testing are not producing export-grade material. |
| 6. Packing (25kg / 50kg / 1MT Jumbo) | $3–6 | Bag cost (HDPE/PP woven + PE liner), packing machine operation, stitching/sealing, labelling, palletisation and shrink-wrap (for small bags). | 25kg bags: ~$5–6/MT. 50kg bags: ~$4–5/MT. 1MT FIBC: ~$3–4/MT. FIBC is cheapest per tonne — labour saving at factory also benefits buyer. |
| 7. Factory Loading (Forklift / Labour) | $1–2 | Loading packed bags/jumbo bags into container at factory premises. Forklift charges, labour for container stuffing, dunnage bags, moisture desiccant packs inside container. | 1MT FIBC loading is faster and cheaper per tonne than 25kg bags. Desiccant adds ~$0.30/MT for moisture protection during sea transit. |
| 8. Road Transport to Port (Rajasthan → Mundra) | $10–13 | Truck freight for full 20ft container (22–25 MT) from Rajasthan production area to Mundra port. Distance approx. 350–500 km. Toll charges included. | Ajmer/Bhilwara to Mundra: ~$10–11/MT. Jaipur/Kishangarh to Mundra: ~$11–12/MT. JNPT (Mumbai) alternative adds $2–3/MT. |
| 9. Export Documentation & Customs | $1–2 | Customs House Agent (CHA) fees, shipping bill filing, GST/customs processing, COO/AIFTA/GSP certificate issuance from Chamber of Commerce or FIEO. | AIFTA Form AI (for ASEAN zero duty) requires FIEO/chamber certification — adds ~$50–80 per shipment, amortised to ~$0.50/MT for FCL. |
| 10. Terminal Handling Charge — Origin (THC-O) | $2.5–3.5 | Port of Mundra terminal handling — container lift-on at container yard, movement to vessel bay, stuffed container inspection fee. | Charged by the shipping line and port operator. Mundra THC: approx. USD 65–80 per 20ft container = ~$3/MT for 25MT load. |
| 11. Inland Container Depot (ICD) / Port Charges | $1–2 | Gate-in charges, container examination (scanning), weighbridge, port entry fees. Applicable at both origin port and sometimes at ICD if container is moved via inland depot first. | Some exporters use ICD at Garhi Harsaru (near Delhi) or Mundra ICD — adds marginal cost but sometimes needed for rail movement. |
| 12. Bank / Finance / Overhead | $1–2 | Letter of Credit (LC) negotiation bank charges, Swift/SWIFT charges, working capital interest, exporter overhead & margin. Included in final FOB price. | LC buyers should allow additional $3–5/MT for LC opening and discounting costs. TT advance saves this charge. |
| TOTAL FOB MUNDRA — All In | $65–75 | Complete cost from mine to loaded on vessel at Mundra Port. 200M / 325M powder, 50kg bags, standard export grade feldspar or quartz. | This is the price ON the vessel. Buyer pays ocean freight from here onward. |

The core sea freight charge from origin port (Mundra) to destination port. Quoted per TEU (20ft container) or per MT. For dry bulk minerals in containers, often quoted per TEU.
Charged at the destination port by the shipping line — covers crane lift-off vessel, movement to container yard, and first ground placement. Buyer pays this even on CFR terms.
Crane charge for lifting container on and off vessels. Separate from THC in some ports. LO = crane cost at origin to load container onto vessel. LO off = crane cost at destination to offload.
Shipping lines add a fuel surcharge based on current oil prices. Called BAF (Bunker Adjustment Factor) or EBS (Emergency Bunker Surcharge). Fluctuates monthly. Can add significant cost during high-oil periods.
Shipping line charge for issuing the Bill of Lading document — the title to the cargo that triggers payment under an LC. Includes original B/L printing (3 originals typically) and surrender/telex release if requested.
Applied when a destination port experiences unusual congestion causing vessel waiting time. Common at major Asian, GCC, and European ports during peak seasons. Unpredictable — check with your freight forwarder before booking.
Customs seal placement on container at origin port. Required by all major shipping lines. Also covers ISPS (International Ship & Port Facility Security) compliance levy — mandatory under IMO convention.
Since IMO 2020 low-sulphur fuel regulations, shipping lines pass the cost of low-sulphur fuel compliance to shippers via an LSS (Low Sulphur Surcharge) or ECS (Environmental Compliance Surcharge). Ongoing charge on all routes.
